The eight stories in this collection grapple with the different ways by which humans handle frustration They may be ugly they may. I m torn between giving this two or three stars because while the ideasconcepts behind the stories were good enough I m not sure I liked what I read tbhSakto lang I guess Sana binili ko na lang yung bagong Zsazsa ZaturnnahTypographical errors are there the typesetting seems to forget what to do for enye and we get words like seora instead Some sentences make me wonder what the hell is going on I guess I got the feeling of being a soldier right or wrong Wrong at the start because I doubt anyone who expected to die could go to battle confidently Right because anyone who actually survives only feels reliefWhat does that meanI m also not a fan of stories that use the first person point of view It feels lazy to me and considering these stories are supposed to be noir whatever that means I feel like the first person pov could have been used to better effect If you have to tell it using I as the narrator at least give me a reason why Also it doesn t really show off how much of a range the writer has in writing All the stories are in first person pov and I feel like having done so limits the writer and what he can do with perspectiveAnyway an overarching theme of the book seems to be people being people in their darkest hours Greed selfishness pride and violence litter the book That s what I m here for and I m not condemning the stories for that But also I feel like there s a lot of condescending anger coming from these storiesWhat do I mean Well I mean years and years ago I wrote a bunch of short stories for my undergrad thesis at the same university the author took his masterals in All of those stories reflected a bleak and emo outlook about life in general and I cringe whenever I have to read them again Thank you my thesis advisers for not wanting to box my ears making them read those monstrosities They weren t exactly bad stories But they stemmed from emotionsfeelings that were doing no one any good In short it was entitled dross I wouldn t exactly call the stories from this book entitled dross but the anger in them the subtle judgement that I feel from between the lines isn t my cup of tea either The writer describes them as tales of humans being humans and failing to do so another weird turn of grammar but call me an idealist if you will but humans are better than this I can t put my finger on exactly why because heaven knows I ve read books with unpleasant characters before I m also in the middle of reading Otsuichi s Goth so it s not like I m not prepared for any of this but a lot of things about the characters and the stories rub me the wrong way Not my cup of tea like I said But a good enough way to spend a couple hours over the weekend Touched or three stars because while the ideasconcepts behind the stories were good enough I m
